Description

Played some more, and she spoke to me some more. Last gaming session, she's been breaking her bow strings, and deciding that repossessing kidneys with her short sword was more her style. She'll keep the bow for that long distance pain.

In fact, Ash is a city girl. Her family is involved with the local thieves' guild as fences. People bring in "recovered" things, and they make it good to sell. Nice little niche. What can be more desirable than to have loyal wizards on retainer to identify and handle the highly desirable magic items, rather than depending on wizards in financial trouble? So, promising children get a chance to go to the city university and study magic. After, they covertly work for the guild. In order to get a grant/chance at it, they have to prove their desire and ability and are loaned a magic primer. While Ash was studying, her cousin actually in the university drew ire from another student who came from an untouchable family. Ash offered to take care of the issue, and received the blessing from the guild... provided she wasn't caught.

The next few weeks, she studied her target. Learned what she most desired, then made certain to give it to her. All stolen, all hidden around her target, and in her effects. The first offense, the judge dismissed. The second, and third... those were dismissed, but started questions, sowed doubts. A few months passed, and the city hosted an emissary from the king. The guild sent its best to heist a magical ring.... which ended up in one of the target's "hiding spots." The furor after was a rare thing, and the guild master nearly lost his nerve.

All through it, Ash stayed almost supernaturally cool. She even played dice with the investigators in the ale house when they made their rounds to question people. Because she didn't steal it, she got away with her part of setting up the target. She even gave them a "who would be that stupid" line.

Just as if well trained hounds, the town's investigators checked the hiding spots, and the target panicked and tried to flee. Since the ring was in her material pouch, it went with her. Shame fell on the house and the target went to jail. Any spells that showed "innocence" were discounted. After all, they could be countered with magic.

Ash's cousin was free to study. The guild master sent the actual thieves out until the atmosphere went back to normal, and sent Ash along to a tiny river town where he had a warehouse of sorts. There she studied her primer until a call from the town guard came to go with a bunch of other volunteers to check out why the goblins and orcs were on an extermination rampage through the countryside around the small river town.

Far as her party knows, she handles the looting, the accountancy, splitting the gold, and selling the items. And repossessing kidneys. She works very well with Enchy, the gnome warrior, for positioning and killing the goblins. The paladin hasn't had any reason to look hard at her: she seems like a pretty decent type.

Paladin: "Did you figure in the tithe?"
Ash: "Tithe your own share."

Ash does keep in mind that she has to send her cut to the guild.

She has also made a breakthrough with her magic primer, but it seems like illusions are the easiest to actually perform. And who doesn't like a helpful little mage hand to lift things?
